Engineer’s Guide to Butterfly Valve Types: Concentric, Double, and Triple Offset

The Important Role of Butterfly Valves in Water Systems

In modern water treatment plants, municipal supply networks, pump stations and hydropower systems, butterfly valves—thanks to their compact structure, quick actuation and largediameter advantages—serve as vital control elements. A properly selected butterfly valve can improve system efficiency, reduce pressure loss, and cut installation and maintenance costs.

However, with numerous structural types and common selection pitfalls, improper matching of butterfly valves to operating conditions can still lead to reduced performance, difficult actuation or shortened service life.

Comparison of Three Main Butterfly Valve Structures

 TypeStructural Features Applicable Applications
ConcentricThe butterfly plate shaft is located on the centerline of the valve body, the butterfly plates are symmetrical, and the sealing ring is an elastic element。Low-pressure water supply, low-temperature fluids, large-diameter branch pipelines.
Double OffsetThe butterfly plate axis is eccentric laterally and longitudinally from the center line, and the sealing surface is made of metal or elastic seal.Municipal main pipes, medium-pressure systems, and pump outlet pipe sections.
Triple OffsetOn the basis of double eccentricity, a third eccentric Angle is added (usually conical design), and a metal sealing surface is adopted.Large-scale projects involving high pressure, high temperature, oil, gas and water conservancy.

Note:

Although the centerline butterfly valve has a wide range of applications, it often encounters problems such as high sealing and large opening and closing force in medium and high pressure, large diameter and corrosive working conditions.

Double eccentric butterfly valves are widely adopted in water supply systems due to their opening and closing performance and cost-effectiveness.

Triple eccentric butterfly valves are more suitable for extreme working conditions, but they have higher costs and driver requirements.

Common Selection Mistakes and Engineering Issues

Misconception  1: Still choosing centerline butterfly valves in medium and high pressure applications:

Many projects choose the centerline type for medium-pressure main pipes due to budget considerations. However, in actual operation, it is prone to seal failure, leakage or excessive opening and closing torque.

Misconception  2: Ignoring the opening and closing advantages brought by “eccentric design” :

Double eccentric or triple eccentric structures significantly reduce torque and increase service life. However, some projects still select models based on traditional thinking, resulting in overly large drives or frequent maintenance.

Misconception  3: Using three eccentric butterfly valves in raw water scenarios with a high content of particles and suspended solids:

Although the three-eccentric structure is high-end, in situations with many particles and heavy sand and mud, the metal seal may wear out more quickly. Therefore, elastic seat seals or butterfly valves with filter protection should be preferred.

Engineering issue tips: The selection of driver specifications is rather conservative, installation space is neglected, the cost of sealing and maintenance is high, and the materials do not match the corrosive working conditions.

Core Recommendation: Double Offset & Hydraulic Control Butterfly Valves in WaterHydraulic Projects

 Double Offset Butterfly Valve

In the NORITE product line, double offset butterfly valves stand out for their low torque, long life and moderate cost, making them a preferred choice for reservoirs, dam outlets, pump stations and municipal mains. Their offset shafts allow smooth operation, and the sealing face can be either resilient or metal-seat for diversified conditions.

Hydraulic Controlled Butterfly Valve

Hydraulic controlled butterfly valves, powered by hydraulic actuators, enable precise control of largediameter, highpressure butterfly valves. Especially suitable for hydropower intake tunnels, pump station outlets or highhead pipelines. NORITE hydraulic control systems integrate with SCADA for remote operation and load regulation.

Advantage Summary:

Fast operation, low torque

Suitable for large size, high pressure lines

Integrates smart monitoring & remote control

Integrates smart monitoring & remote control

Application Scenarios

Reservoir Dam Spillway & Transfer Pipelines

For dam spillways and transfer pipelines, double offset butterfly valves with pneumatic/hydraulic actuators ensure rapid closure under extreme head conditions.

HydroPower Plant Intake & Tailwater Systems

Hydraulic controlled butterfly valves at hydro plant intakes/tailwater enable automatic load regulation and efficient plant operations.

Large Pump Station Discharge & Main Pipeline Network

Municipal or irrigation pump station discharge lines use double offset butterfly valves for large diameter, high flow valve control.

Municipal Distribution Network & Regional Metering Stations

Butterfly valves are widely applied in branch lines and metering stations due to compact installation and costeffectiveness.
