Construction and Operation

How the SLW Horizontal Centrifugal Pump Works

Liquid enters the impeller eye through the suction side. The motor rotates one impeller, increasing liquid velocity; the casing then converts part of that velocity into pressure and directs the liquid to the discharge. Because one impeller develops the head, the SLW is a single-stage pump. “Single suction” means liquid enters the impeller from one side.

The horizontal motor-and-pump arrangement gives service personnel direct access to the pump cover, mechanical seal and motor. The exact dismantling sequence, lifting points and pipework requirements depend on the selected model and installation.

Hydraulic assembly

Pump body, impeller and pump cover guide the liquid through the suction and discharge path.

Sealing components

Mechanical seal, deflector and plugs support leakage control, venting and service access.

Drive and installation

Motor, baseplate, direction plate and fastening bolts support alignment and installation.

Preliminary Model Screening

Horizontal Centrifugal Pump Performance Range

The supplied SLW hydraulic coverage chart groups model envelopes at 2960, 1480 and 980 r/min. Use it for preliminary screening only. Every pump size has its own Q-H curve and preferred operating region, so final selection must be checked against a model-specific curve.

Duty point

  • Required, normal, minimum and maximum flow
  • Total dynamic head at each point

Hydraulic checks

  • Efficiency and absorbed power
  • NPSHr versus available NPSH

Appropriate Duties

Where the SLW Horizontal Centrifugal Pump Fits

Building Water Supply

Clean-water transfer and pressure boosting sized from actual demand, static lift and pipeline losses.

HVAC and Hot-Water Circulation

Chilled-water, cooling-water and compatible hot-water circulation, subject to temperature, seal and material review.

Irrigation and Distribution

Water transfer for irrigation and distribution networks when the duty falls within the selected model curve.

Municipal Clean-Water Duties

Urban water supply and drainage duties where the liquid and solids content remain within confirmed pump limits.

Fire-Protection Water Systems

Pressure-boosting duties only after the required codes, approvals, driver and control package are confirmed.

Compatible Industrial Liquids

Transfer of clean water and compatible non-corrosive, low-solids liquids after material and seal review.

Do not select the SLW for abrasive slurry, sewage solids, seawater or aggressive chemicals without a project-specific hydraulic, material and seal review.

Project Reference

Mambu Branco Water Supply Expansion

The Mambu Branco integrated water-supply expansion addressed insufficient intake capacity and seasonal pressure on the regional network. The works included new intake facilities, large pumping stations and approximately 66 km of water-supply pipelines.

LocationSão Paulo State, Brazil
OwnerState water and sewage company
Project scaleAbout 66 km of pipelines
Population servedApproximately 1.2 million

Pump scope: vertical single-stage pumps, vertical two-stage pumps and horizontal centrifugal pumps operating as one integrated water-supply system.

Result: increased water-supply capacity and improved reliability during peak summer demand.

Liquid Compatibility

Material Options for the Pumped Liquid

Depending on model and duty, SLW configurations may be available in cast iron, stainless steel 304, 316 or 316L, duplex stainless steel 2205 or 2507, 904L and bronze. A material grade alone does not establish chemical compatibility.

Selection should consider liquid composition, chloride content, pH, concentration, temperature, solids and cleaning chemicals. Request a project-specific bill of materials identifying the casing, impeller, shaft-related parts, fasteners, mechanical seal and elastomers.

Buyer Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a horizontal centrifugal pump?

It is a centrifugal pump with the pump shaft and motor arranged horizontally. The SLW uses one single-suction impeller and is selected from the required flow, head, liquid and installation conditions.

How is an SLW different from a vertical inline pump?

The hydraulic principle can be similar, but the shaft and motor arrangement, equipment footprint, pipe layout and maintenance access differ. Select the layout that fits the site and approved duty.

Do the maximum flow and head belong to one SLW model?

No. They describe the overall series envelope. A model-specific Q-H curve and datasheet are required for the actual selection.

Can the SLW circulate hot water?

The supplied series information lists liquid temperatures up to 120°C, but the exact limit depends on the selected seal, materials and working pressure.

Which material should be used?

Material selection depends on liquid composition, chloride level, pH, temperature, solids and cleaning chemicals. Provide complete liquid data for review.

Can the SLW operate on both 50 Hz and 60 Hz?

Series configurations are listed for 50 and 60 Hz. Performance changes with rotational speed, so the correct model curve and motor data must be confirmed.

Is the SLW self-priming?

A standard centrifugal pump should not be assumed to be self-priming. Confirm suction conditions, priming method and available NPSH during selection.

What should I send for pump selection?

Send required flow, total head, liquid, temperature, suction conditions, voltage and frequency, material preference, quantity, destination and applicable project standards.
